WWE 24/7 - Old School - Boston Garden 11/9/85 Review - December 24, 2007
WWE Old School Boston Garden 11/9/85. I watched this recently on WWE 24/7. Enjoyable show and I thought I'd give a quick review on it. Gorilla Monsoon and Lord Alfred Hayes on commentary. I still am amazed at how easy Gorilla was able to make commentary. He was one of my favorite commentators growing up and he still is. He just had a way of calling matches so personally. The opening match was Corporal Kirchner against Rene Goulet. This was mostly a sloppy looking match which saw the Corporal get the win following a samoan drop style move. Second match is Bret Hart vs. Leaping Lanny Poffo. This was a good match which saw Bret get the win following a counter move in the corner. Bret threw Lanny down in the corner in a powerbomb type fall and used the momentum to pin him to the mat. Gorilla thought that Bret may have used a foot on the rope to help with the pin. We had a bad camera angle but I can't see that Bret did use the rope for the pin. Jim Neidhart defeated Tony Garea in a quick match. Neidhart wins following a powerslam. Next up was Randy Savage vs. Tony Atlas. The crowd was all standing for the first time of the night for Savage and Elizabeth. This wasn't a very long match either which saw Savage trying to outsmart the more powerful Atlas. Savage counters a powerslam into a small package for the victory. Next is Cowboy Bob Orton getting a win on Pedro Morales. Match ends when Pedro hits an atomic drop but Orton's momentum carries him into referee Danny Davis. Pedro went for the pinfall but the ref was still down. Pedro went and got the ref off the mat but was nailed by Orton and the cast. The ref turns to see Orton on top for the pinfall giving Orton the win. Next up is a wild match with Ricky The Dragon Steamboat taking on The Magnificent Muraco. Ref doesn't enforce a thing in this match as belts are used for choking. Steamboat hits a flying high crossed body but Fuji jumps up on the apron. Instead of going for the pin, Steamboat nails Fuji who drops the cane. Steamboat grabs it and proceeds to wear Muraco out with it. I was waiting to see if the ref would DQ him for it but he didn't. The ref does DQ him when he tries to grab the cane away from Steamboat and he ends up getting thrown down. That causes the DQ and Muraco gets the DQ win. Rowdy Roddy Piper and Bob Orton come to the ring next for a special Piper's Pit. Bruno Sammartino had promised to do two Piper's Pits and this was the second one. Piper is a heat magnet in Boston. Bruno arrives and says that he wasn't going to put up with any badmouthing. He promises to shove the microphone down Piper's throat if he says anything derogatory. Pretty funny. Piper then calls him a name and slaps him. Bruno jumps on Piper who gets hit by the cast from Orton. Piper and Orton pound on Bruno and then leave. Really entertaining Piper's Pit and the crowd was going nuts when Bruno jumped on Piper. The Dream Team of Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine defeated the team of Mike Rotundo and Danny Spivey when Beefcake pinned Spivey. The Junk Yard Dog defeated Terry Funk with a small package. After the match, Funk attacked JYD. Funk was then going to let Jimmy Hart beat on JYD and as he went for the kick, JYD caught it. Jimmy then bailed out of the ring. Last match of the night was one that the crowd didn't stick around for. The crowd mostly left after the previous match. The British Bulldogs defeated Barry O and Moondog Spot when Dynamite Kid pinned Moondog with a high crossed body. That was the end of the show. Enjoyable house show and I love watching these cause I've never seen these shows. These house shows only aired locally in the areas of the shows and didn't air nationally. I'll review more of these for you in the future.
