WWE 24/7 - Old School - MSG 12/26/87 Review - January 14, 2008

12/26/87 WWF house show from MSG. That was the show that I watched recently on WWE 24/7. It's hard to believe that this show is now twenty years old. I had never seen this show. Here are the results of it and my thoughts on it. Gorilla Monsoon and Lord Alfred Hayes called the action. Show opened with a match between SD Jones and Iron Mike Sharpe. This was a surprisingly solid match with the trademark Sharpe groaning while selling moves. Sharpe gets the win. WOW. Nothing says your WWF run is over like losing to Iron Mike Sharpe. Next up was The Rougeaus defeating The Conquistadors. Solid match with a spot in it that I really liked. One of the Conquistadors ran across the ring but Jacque ducked and he dove out of the ring on to his partner. Rougeaus got the win with their double team flip move in the corner. I can never remember if they had a name for that finishing move or not. It was obvious that The Conquistadors just weren't up to par in this match and it just goes to prove just how impressive that their comeback was in 2000 when they won the WWF tag team titles. What a comeback by them that year and they drew amazing inspiration from Edge and Christian to do it. :) Hacksaw Jim Duggan took on Sika in the next match. I should point out that Heenan did commentary for the first part of the show until he had to manage. He was done with commentary after this match but he had a great line in this one saying "Duggan's biggest mistake right now is that he's trying to think". Duggan wins with the three point stance. Next up is the women's championship match with Sensational Sherri defending against Rockin' Robin. Sherri would win the match when Robin would go for a splash off the ropes and Sherri got her knees up to block it. Sherri then got the pin. If you'll remember, Robin would finally defeat Sherri for that belt in 1988 in Paris. Next match is Brutus The Barber Beefcake taking on Greg The Hammer Valentine with Jimmy Hart in his corner. Gorilla's commentary really stood out in this match and it always did. He called the action and would point out little things such as in this match saying that he couldn't believe that Valentine wasn't hooking both legs at times trying to make a pin. Match ends with Brutus having a sleeper on Valentine but Jimmy Hart jumps up on the apron and has Beefcake's scissors. Beefcake gives chase to him and gets Jimmy's jacket as he chases him to the back. He then gets counted out giving Valentine the win. My first thought was just get new scissors. They weren't even his custom made scissors that he would have in the next year or so. Just replace the regular scissors and win the match. LOL. Beefcake returns and he and Valentine go at it. He counters Valentine's figure four attempts and then gets the scissors ready to go but Valentine bails out. Beefcake chases him off and then threatens to cut Jimmy Hart's jacket up. He doesn't but does keep it. Ricky The Dragon Steamboat vs. Ravishing Rick Rude was the next match. Long match that concludes with Steamboat hitting a top rope chop as the bell rings. 20 minute time limit draw is the decision. Heenan gets on the mic saying that Steamboat is lucky that the match didn't go another five minutes saying that even he could have beaten Steamboat with another five minutes. Steamboat has enough going after Heenan but Rude hits him from behind. They go at it with the refs trying to separate them. Steamboat ends up running Heenan off as well. The next match had Cowboy Lang and Chris Dude getting the win on Lord Littlebrook and Little Tokyo when Lang pins Tokyo. Tokyo and Littlebrook kept not getting along during the match. Main event time is next with The Honky Tonk Man defending the Intercontinental title against Macho Man Randy Savage. Rule in effect is that Jimmy Hart has to be suspended in a little cage above the ring keeping him from interfering. Although, Honky still has a back up with his new girlfriend Peggy Sue who if you didn't know was Sensational Sherri dressed up in a wig and sunglasses. Elizabeth is of course at ringside with Savage. LOVED this match. Crowd was really into it too. I love 1980's Randy Savage matches and always have. Hart refuses to go in the cage and Savage ends up taking matters into his own hands by physically putting Hart in the cage. Match gets to the end with Honky shoving Savage into the ref and knocking him down. Honky goes for the shake, rattle, and roll but Savage counters it with a back drop. He nails Honky with a high knee knocking him to the outside. Savage goes to the top rope looking for a double axe handle on to Honky on the floor but Peggy Sue has gotten a hold of Elizabeth on the other side of the ring. Savage runs and breaks that up. Honky nails Savage from behind knocking him off the apron. Honky gets the ref up wanting him to count Savage out of the ring. Elizabeth keeps trying to help Savage up. The ref calls for the bell but wasn't actually counting. Honky gets nailed with a drink which you could only hear and also hear the pop from the crowd before they show him looking wet. The ref rules the win to Savage by a disqualification. Jimmy is let out of the cage. Honky goes after the ref for the call that he made. Savage goes after Honky and gets Jimmy as well ramming their heads together. Savage then realizes that he is left in the ring with Peggy Sue. Savage rips the blonde wig off of her head as she bails out of the ring. This was a very fun match which I was really looking forward to seeing. I have great memories of that Savage/Honky feud as it was really good stuff from 1987-1988. Anyway, fun show to watch!!
