WWE 24/7 - Old School - LA 8/13/88 - Recap - April 14, 2008

Old School review for you this week and I love doing these. Courtesy of WWE 24/7, I watched the WWF house show that took place from Los Angeles on August 13, 1988. Very fun show. The show had commentary by Gorilla Monsoon and Superstar Billy Graham. Opening match of the show was Sam Houston defeating Black Jack with the steerbuster bulldog move. Match was a solid opener. I never was really crazy about Sam Houston and the masked Black Jack was somebody I hadn't seen before. The next match was very fun to watch as The Blue Angel took on Barry Horowitz. Blue Angel was none other than Owen Hart in a mask before he did the Blue Blazer gimmick. Owen looked really strong in this match. Funny commentary from Superstar in this match as he questioned why so many wrestlers were wearing masks including this match and the opening match. Superstar asked if they owed taxes or something. LOL. Loved Owen's spot where he hit a long distance top rope drop kick and then kipped up out of it. Horowitz looked good in this match as well. Blue Angel wins following a moonsault off the top rope for the pin. Next up was The Powers Of Pain taking on The Bolsheviks. Powers Of Pain jump them during their singing of the anthem. See, now that was what I was complaining about a few weeks ago on Raw. They got through the anthem on Raw!! They're supposed to get jumped. LOL. Crowd popped for Powers Of Pain huge when did the attack during the anthem. Match was more competitive than I thought it would be. Powers Of Pain win with their tag team finisher that I always loved with Warlord hitting the powerslam followed by Barbarian hitting the headbutt off the top rope. Next match was Curt Hennig taking on SD Jones. Jesse Ventura joined in on commentary on this match. I loved the commentary on this one. This was back when Monsoon and Ventura would get along doing commentary. Interesting comment from Ventura in this match which matched up with today when he said that he was going back to work in Hollywood now that the writers strike was over. Hennig wins the match after he countered out of the corner with a clothesline getting the pinfall. Main event time in the middle of the show as Macho Man Randy Savage defended the WWF title against Andre The Giant. Big pop for Savage and Elizabeth as they made their way to the ring. A Savage/Andre match takes me back to that time of watching wrestling as a kid for sure. Heenan was kicked out of the ringside area immediately cause he kept harassing Elizabeth. Andre ended up taking the turnbuckle off during the match but Savage was able to counter it. Savage repeatedly threw Andre's head into the steel leaving Andre very wobbly in the ring. Andre fell and Savage was up on the top turnbuckle immediately. He hit the big elbow but Andre had a power kick out to avoid the loss. The announcers put over how no one had ever kicked out the big elbow which wasn't true. LOL. Andre ends up on the outside of the ring and Elizabeth ends up on the apron. Andre grabs her foot and she immediately falls. Savage goes to her aid and he and Andre both get counted out. After the result of the match was announced, Savage carries Elizabeth to the back to have her checked out by a doctor. Next is The Hart Foundation taking on The Fabulous Rougeaus. This was not long after the Harts had dumped Jimmy Hart. Ending of the match had Bret hitting a piledriver on Jacques. As the ref is distracted and Bret goes for the pin, Raymond hits an axehandle on to Bret. Raymond makes the pin but he was the illegal man in the ring. Rougeaus still win. After that match, we then get a surprise as Randy Savage walks to the ring. Savage gets the mic furious over what happened earlier. He said that when Elizabeth is hurting that he is hurting and Andre will pay. He said he had signed a blank contract for a rematch. He also added that he was going to kick Andre's.....wait did he just say that in 1988? Speaking of that, let's take you to the last match where Jake The Snake tells the same thing to Rick Rude for the fact that he wore the tights with his wife on them earlier on TV. Rude was not wearing them during this match. If you aren't familiar with this feud, this was great stuff. Rude always mocked Jake by wearing tights that had her face on them. This was a great feud!! Very fun match and the crowd was very into it. No Heenan in this match as it had been pointed out that he had been kicked out of the actual building earlier. Ending of the match had Rude going for a slam carrying him from the apron but Jake fell on top of him getting the pinfall. That was it for the show. I really enjoyed it and the time flew by fast.
