WWE 24/7 - Old School - MSG 3/23/92 Recap - November 10, 2008

September was Forever Flair month on WWE 24/7 and I reviewed one house involving Flair that aired on the service. This week, I’ll review the other one. This show took place on March 23, 1992 from MSG. A couple of things to mention to start with as the show was the last WWF show that aired on MSG Network for many years. Also, this show took place just a couple of weeks before WrestleMania VIII. Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan are your commentary team which means a lot of entertainment. I find that I even enjoy bad matches just cause of their commentary. The show opened with Tatanka taking on Colonel Mustafa. I can’t remember the name of Tatanka’s finishing move at all cause it has been so long. Tatanka trivia hasn’t ever been one of my strong points anyway. LOL. Tatanka won with his airplane spin into a slam move for the win. Next was IRS taking on El Matador, Tito Santana. After watching the previous strong match involving IRS on the other MSG show, I was looking forward to seeing what would happen here. Let’s just say that I wasn’t disappointed with this match a bit. The match went to a 20 minute time limit draw and was fun. Next was The Model Rick Martel getting a win over JW Storm after Storm went facefirst into the turnbuckle and Martel rolled him for the win while holding the tights. This got us to a bizarrely entertaining six man tag team match that had Bret Hart and The Bushwhackers taking on The Mountie and The Nasty Boys. Good comedy at the beginning with The Bushwhackers wearing Bret Hart sunglasses and them posing like Bret across the ring. Bret then did the Bushwhacker walk with them across the ring. At one point, The Nasties and The Mountie threaten to leave but the ref threatened a $5000 fine if they don’t return. Remember those days!! Very funny moment when Brian Knobbs was trash talking with a fan and accidentally fell off the apron. It barely was visible on TV and Monsoon and Heenan said nothing for several seconds after it happened making me wonder if they couldn’t talk cause they were laughing so hard at it. Bret rolled up The Mountie to win a fun match. After that, it was time for a match that I barely paid attention to and that was The Warlord defeating Jim Brunzell following a powerslam. This brought us to a newly heel Shawn Michaels with Sensational Sherri taking on Virgil, who was wearing a face protector due to a broken nose courtesy of Sid Justice. I had forgotten about that!! Heenan had to get his classic line of how a hockey game might break out during the match cause we might have a faceoff. Classic Heenan. The face protector was a good mental portion of the match. Shawn as a heel would pull the protector up and then nail Virgil right in the face. Virgil ended up hitting the turnbuckle face first too without the protector. Danny Davis put the protector back on Virgil’s face to protect him. Virgil eventually got mad and took off the protector using it as a weapon. Virgil would miss a knee in the corner allowing Shawn to hit his suplex that was his finishing move at the time. That got Shawn the win. Funny moment after the break when Howard Finkel announces “Shawn Michaels has left the building” while Gorilla Monsoon yells “who cares??!!”. Funny stuff. Time for the main event and this had a big time fight feel to it especially leading up to WrestleMania VIII and who would be leaving the company not long afterward. Hulk Hogan teams with Intercontinental Champion Rowdy Roddy Piper to take on WWF Champion Ric Flair and Sid Justice. You might remember of how WrestleMania VIII was going to be Hogan’s last match and how they kept talking about him retiring after that match. He did go away for about a year after that event. Flair was around for almost another year. Piper would be downplayed after losing the belt at Mania so this show felt like a changing of the guard of sorts. Seeing Hogan and Piper teaming at MSG was very cool too and that was huge as well. They did team in 1987 as well at MSG. There was a perfect spot early in the match that had me cheering. Flair goes for an inverted atomic drop on Piper. Piper blocks it but Flair thinks he hit it. He goes and whooos right at Hogan but turns to get poked right in the eye by Piper. It was perfect!!! Sid got a big pop from MSG when he tagged into the match. Hogan eventually got the hot tag and hit the ledrop on to Flair. Sid then nailed Hogan with a bag of something while the ref was distracted keeping Piper out of the ring. Flair went for the pin but Hogan kicked out and hulked up. All four brawled followed by Hogan sneaking up behind Flair nailing him with a clothesline for the pin. Piper held Sid from getting there to break up the count. I really enjoyed the main event and the overall show.
