Raw, Smackdown, TNA Impact, & ROH on HDNet Recaps - November 30, 2009
Welcome to the “want to see great tag team wrestling action, tune into Ring Of Honor” edition of The Wrestling List. Ten years and counting for the List and let’s get right into it as I’ve got recaps of Raw, Smackdown, TNA Impact, and Ring Of Honor on HDNet.
Tonight’s Raw was from Baltimore and was a solid show for the most part. It opened with Jericho and Big Show talking trash on how they would win at TLC against DX. DX arrived and said how glad they would be that Jericho would be off Raw when they beat them at TLC. Remember that Jericho is a member of the Smackdown roster and is on both shows due to being a tag team champion. Jericho countered by saying that he knew how badly it ate up DX to never have been tag team champions. Triple H ended up challenging Jericho for later in the night and Jericho accepted. However, there was a stipulation from JeriShow. The loser of the match has to face the other team in a handicap match. DX agreed and the match took place to finish the show. Shawn and Big Show were on commentary during the match. Show got up at one point and Shawn did as well. Show shoved Shawn into the apron. Triple H leaned over and took a knockout punch from Show. The ref threw Big Show out of the ringside area. As the ref was turned, Shawn landed a superkick on to Jericho. The ref saw Shawn leaving the ring so he kicked him out as well. The codebreaker and pedigree were each countered. Triple H countered the walls sending Jericho into the corner. Triple H then rolled up Jericho for the win. That means that it will be Jericho vs. DX next week in Dallas. Randy Orton was set to take on Kofi Kingston tonight. As Kofi made his way to the ring, Rhodes attacked and then threw him into the steps. Kofi fought his way to his feet saying that the match will still happen. Orton’s music hit but no Orton. Dibiase ran in from the crowd and attacked Kofi from behind. He did an attack on Kofi’s leg. Dibiase left as Kofi continued to try and get to his feet. He still demanded that the match would happen. Orton then arrived ready to attack. He worked over Kofi’s injured leg and put a beating on Kofi. Kofi fought back for a little offense at the end but got hit by a RKO. Orton gets the pin but afterwards continued the assault by hitting the DDT out of the corner. Number one contender, Sheamus, was in action earlier in the night putting a beating on Santino including putting him through a table in the corner. John Cena arrived later in the night doing an intense promo saying that if he lost the title, he would be accepting his rematch clause at TLC cause he was challenging Sheamus tonight saying that the war was on. Carlito arrived instead of Cena. Carlito did a promo talking about how he didn’t know anything about Sheamus but wanted Sheamus to win. He said that the whole locker room including himself was tired of Cena and wanted him to lose. Carlito said that Cena may represent the fans but Sheamus represents the locker room. Cena fired back saying that Carlito picked the wrong night and said that if he didn’t like how he did things, step up. Carlito put the apple in his mouth and then caught a right hand from Cena. Cena hit the adjustment and then threw Carlito out of the ring. Sheamus arrived on the ramp and he and Cena stared off. Cena called Sheamus to the ring but Sheamus backed up and walked off. Verne Troyer was the guest host for the night and his involvement in the show centered around Miz, MVP, and Mark Henry. Miz and Troyer exchanged trash talk earlier in the show and then Henry came out to stand up for Troyer when Miz threatened for it to get physical. Troyer made a match with Henry vs. Miz which Henry won. The other theme for the night with them was Henry suddenly becoming a dancer. So, after the match they danced with the divas. Melina teamed with Gail Kim to take on Maryse and Jillian. Maryse and Melina were set to go at it to begin and then Maryse tagged out while mocking Melina. I liked the exchange between the two of them as Melina looked intense as she wanted to get her hands on Maryse who continued to mock her. The two did go at it later but Maryse countered Melina’s sunset flip out of the corner. Maryse then won with a DDT so Maryse has now pinned the Divas champion clean.
Other notes from Raw. I like the new intense John Cena that they are doing in the last couple of weeks in this Sheamus feud. I liked the exchange of Cena and Carlito. I also liked the exchange of Maryse and Melina like I’ve already said. Maryse is good with her character for sure and I like how she mocks her opponents. Melina was really great tonight too with the intensity of how she wanted to get to Maryse. I liked the segment of Orton and Kofi. The story was that Kofi was taking everything that Legacy had and wasn’t going to back down. The odds caught up to him but he fought the whole way. Can Mark Henry go back to being a destroyer instead of a dancer? Yeah, not crazy about all that. I did find Henry landing on Jillian to be funny though. What was up with Lawler when Santino made his way to the ring? He didn’t know that it was a match. Does he look at the lineup? LOL. It was just kind of bizarre. I did laugh at him later when he pointed out Cole’s comment of “this is almost unfair” to Kofi’s matchup with Orton. Well, yeah!! LOL.
Last week’s Smackdown opened with Chris Jericho upset over being left out of the #1 contender’s match main event. The match was set for Kane vs. Batista with the winner facing Undertaker at TLC. Teddy Long arrived on the scene and gave Jericho a non title match against The Undertaker later in the show. The Kane/Batista match had Kane hitting a chokeslam but Batista got his foot on the rope to stop the pin attempt. Batista rolled out of the ring and the fight went to the floor. Kane sent Batista over the barricade and then Kane followed. Batista grabbed a chair and nailed Kane with it while he was still laying low. So, the ref didn’t see that in the ring. Batista then got up and got in the ring. The ref counted Kane out of the ring and Batista wins. Later, Batista did commentary (or actually didn’t say one word on commentary which I always think is goofy) during the Undertaker/Jericho match. During the match, the fight was on the floor. Batista started to sneak up from behind on Taker but Taker turned to see him. The two faced off with Batista smiling and then sitting back down. The finish had Undertaker lifting Jericho for the tombstone. Batista then slid in the ring and chop blocked Taker from behind. Jericho then hit a codebreaker as Batista went to get a chair. Jericho left and Batista pounded Undertaker in the back with the chair many times. In other happenings, CM Punk brought out Luke Gallows, formerly known as Festus. Punk said he was continuing his straight edge brigade and pointed out how he had helped Gallows turn his life around. Ok, so are they saying that the whole Festus bell ring and snapping gimmick was a drug problem??!! LOL. Anyone else find it odd to have a heel pushing how you should be drug free? I love the Punk character obviously and I just find it funny how people boo someone for talking about how you should avoid drugs. He ripped on the Jeff Hardy DVD set to be releaed this week but pointed out how he finished Hardy’s career. Matt Hardy arrived on the scene and said that Jeff was a free spirit but had his faults like everyone. Matt said that Punk was more upset that Jeff wouldn’t be a follower to him. The match then took place between Matt and Punk. Gallows ended up interfering and put a beating on Matt. Punk then got involved as well as they left Matt laying in the ring. Vickie Guerrero got a match for Escobar from Teddy Long for the Intercontinental title. Morrison ended up winning with the starship pain. Vickie was furious after the match yelling at Escobar saying how he messes up every chance that she gets for him. She said she was done and slapped him. She then walked out. Backstage, Escobar walked up telling the same thing to Vickie saying that this opportunity for his career wasn’t worth being with Vickie. He said that he was done. Ok, I thought this was lame. She sends him packing and then he comes back to tell her the same thing. Never mind the fact that Escobar just isn’t impressing me overall. I don’t know what WWE has planned from here on whether they are keeping them together but what is he going to be able to do on his own? I’m just not into that character at all. The Hart Dynasty defeated Cryme Tyme when Smith pinned Shad. Mickie James was interviewed backstage about the treatment from Michelle and Layla. Mickie said that she wasn’t backing down from their behavior toward her. She was pushing forward with her career and not going anywhere. An all right edition of Smackdown. I do like a heel Batista better than a face Batista but I still find myself fast forwarding through his matches. LOL.
Next week’s Raw will be guest hosted by Mark Cuban in Dallas.
I enjoyed last week’s TNA Impact with the focus being on the TNA Championship Series. The tournament would have the winner getting a future title shot against the champion in the division that they compete in. The first round opened with Lashley accompanied by Kristal taking on Abyss. Kristal got caught in the crossfire on the outside of the ring with them going at it. She went down holding her ankle. Abyss looked on from inside the ring asking if he did that to her. Abyss turned around into a spear from Lashley and then Lashley won with the dragon sleeper. Kristal then jumped up and down showing that the ankle was fine. The next match was very solid with Suicide taking on Desmond Wolfe. Wolfe hit the tower of London for the win. Next was another solid match with The Pope taking on Kurt Angle. Pope had quite a bit of fan support going on during this match. Angle hooked the anklelock but Pope was able to get out of it. Angle then hit the Angleslam for the win. The last first round match was Homicide taking on Robert Roode. Roode won with a spinebuster. Homicide was furious after the match grabbing a chair and threatening an assistant producer at ringside. The second round had Wolfe taking on Lashley. Wolfe worked over Lashley’s arm. Lashley was still able to hook the dragon sleeper but Wolfe got to the ropes to break the hold. Wolfe ended up hooking a hold on Lashley’s hurt arm in the ropes but didn’t break on Hebner’s five count. Wolfe was yelling about this being the future for Angle as he had the hold on. So, Wolfe gets DQ’d. Next was Angle taking on Roode. My “WHAT??!!” moment of the match was Roode kicking out of the Angleslam. Are you kidding me? LOL. Wolfe made his way to ringside and got Angle’s attention. He spit at Angle and then Angle jumped to the floor and fought with Wolfe. Angle ended up noticing the ref’s count and tries to beat the count back in but doesn’t make it. Wolfe costs Angle a shot at the title and Wolfe smiles all the way up the ramp about it. Robert Roode gets to the finals and takes on Lashley. Roode worked on Lashley’s injured arm but Lashley was able to hit the spear for the win. Lashley will get a shot at the TNA championship in the future. Speaking of the TNA championship, AJ Styles came to the ring set to talk about Sting’s disappearance but was interrupted by Daniels. Daniels talked about their friendship and he asked where it ever got him talking of how he got fired and AJ couldn’t make one phone call for him to get him back. He also mentioned how AJ stole his championship victory at Turning Point saying he had the match won. Daniels said that the only reason that AJ wanted him as a best friend was because it was better to have him as a best friend than his worst enemy. AJ stood up and was sick of what Daniels was saying while Daniels said that the friendship would no longer be an anchor of his career. This was a really good promo and did really well to build to their match. Mick Foley was shown backstage being very paranoid about who Hogan was bringing with him. Nash said last week that Hogan was bringing someone so that was what Foley was referring to. Foley went to Angle, Steiner, and Nash to try and get answers. Nash and Young messed with Foley’s head with names from the past and Nash promised that he’d tell him if he heard anything from Hogan. Nash then showed that he said that just to get rid of Foley. A Knockouts battle royal was held to crown a number one contender for the Knockouts title. Tara ended up winning it and the special ref for the battle royal was champion, ODB. Tara and ODB faced off after the match with Tara offering a handshake but ODB walked off. Like I said, I enjoyed the show and liked that the show focused mostly on wrestling. The AJ/Daniels segment was really strong. Battle royal was soiid.
I checked out last week's Ring Of Honor HD Net show and thought I'd go ahead and recap it for you. Now, keep in mind that it has been a while since I've seen the ROH product as far as consistency. The show opened with Kenny King with Titus in his corner taking on Brent Albright. King and Titus took out Jerry Lynn the previous week following a big piledriver. Really impressive exploder from Albright as he sent King over the ropes to the floor. Titus did interfere but both he and King were sent into the barrier. As Albright went to suplex King back in the ring, Titus grabbed Albright's foot leading to King getting the win. After the match, Albright looked to fight both of them off. Austin Aries arrived and the triple team was on. As they looked to be about to spike piledrive Albright on to a chair, Colt Cabana ran in and made the save. The next match had D'Lo Brown in basically a squash match against Sal Rinauro. Really liked D'Lo's ring gear which is a play off of the UPS logo. Funny that D'Lo was tweeting during the match as well. The next segment had Nigel McGuinness's farewell from Ring Of Honor. He came to the ring saying that he couldn't summarize all of these years into just a few minutes. He wanted to say thank you to someone and said the person in the back knew who he was. So, he roams back to the backstage area and walks back out. He says that he wants to thank himself for always believing in himself for what he was able to do despite everyone doubting him. There was a big thank you Nigel chant from the crowd. Nigel then said that he was leaving and would never be back. They showed him walking out of the building and down the street. It was a really good promo. Next was The Super Smash Brothers taking on Brandon Day and John Kermon. Dos took out Day on the floor with a dive and then Uno made the rollup to pin Kermon. Jim Cornette was shown backstage talking about the changes coming to Ring Of Honor due to his new role of Executive Producer of ROH TV. He said that there may be problems in the backstage area mostly coming from Aries but that he wasn't going to put up with the selfish attitudes anymore. It was going to be a team effort and said that if anyone wasn't on board or didn't like the new creative direction, there was the door. Good promo. The main event was an incredible match for the ROH tag team titles with The American Wolves defending against The Young Bucks. What a match. Now, this is tag team wrestling!! I like the tandem moves of both teams which we don't get near enough of in today's wrestling. Wow, there is no way to call all of the action in this one!! There was a great spot with the Bucks with one hitting a 450 followed by a moonsault from his partner. The Wolves move which was a powerbomb and backstabber type move was just nasty!! The Wolves ended up winning via a tapout. The fans were chanting "this is awesome" as the match went along and there was no doubt that it was. Best match I have seen in a while. Big thumbs up from me on this first ROH show that I have gotten to see in a while.
Wishing you a great week!! Take care and God bless!!

Raw + Ventura = Greatness, Survivor Series Results, & More
Welcome to the “Jesse Ventura on Raw equals greatness” edition of The Wrestling List. This was a very fun Raw and Ventura was GREAT tonight!!
The WWE Survivor Series PPV was last night and here are the results of the show. The show opened with Team Miz against Team Morrison. One moment in the match had referee Scott Armstrong getting knocked out legit. He accidentally caught a kick in the head from Sheamus which sent him to the mat. He didn’t return for the rest of the night and had suffered a concussion. The finish had Sheamus pinning Morrison to win the match for Team Miz. The survivors of the team were Miz, Sheamus, and McIntyre. Next was Rey Mysterio taking on Batista. Yeah, this was one of those matches where the crowd didn’t work out like WWE wanted. The show was in Washington D.C. which is the hometown of Batista. So, he was getting cheered. Batista hit him with three Batista bombs and then the ref called for the bell stopping the match. Afterwards, Batista got a chair and sat in it at first just watching Rey. Then, he ended up hitting a spinebuster on Rey on the chair. This is obviously going to be used to get Rey off of TV as he will be gone for several months due to upcoming knee surgery. Next was Team Kofi against Team Orton. The finish was big for Kofi. It ended up coming down to him against Punk and Orton after Christian was eliminated. Punk went for a rollup but Kofi was able to roll on through it and then pinned Punk. As Orton went to get in the ring, he was caught with the trouble in paradise kick which led to Kofi pinning him as well making Kofi the lone survivor of his team. Team Kofi gets the win. Big moment for Kofi Kingston for sure!! He has momentum. Let’s just see what WWE does with it cause you just never know. The Undertaker retained the World title in the triple threat match against Jericho and Big Show. Show hit Undertaker with the knockout punch but Jericho and Show both kept stopping each other from making the pin and winning the match. Show nailed Jericho with the knockout punch. As Show was about to go for the chokeslam on Undertaker, Undertaker countered it into the choke and Show tapped out. Next was Team Mickie vs. Team Michelle. It came down to Mickie and Melina against Michelle. Melina pinned Michelle with the sunset flip slam to win the match leaving Mickie and Melina as the survivors of the team. That gets us to the main event of John Cena defending the WWE title against Shawn Michaels and Triple H in the triple threat match. The match started big just as the bell rang. Shawn nailed Triple H with a superkick sending him from the ring. Shawn had a little smile on his face and the crowd was with him on it. Triple H would later get back into the match and would nail Shawn with a spinebuster through the announce table. Just interesting with DX going at it as hard as they were. All three would battle it out and the finish had Shawn slipping off and avoiding the attitude adjustment of Cena. Triple H went for the pedigree on Cena but then caught a superkick from Shawn. Cena then nailed Shawn with an adjustment that landed on Triple H. Cena pinned Triple H to retain the WWE title.
Tonight’s three hour Raw was guest hosted by Jesse Ventura and this was a really fun show. All three brands on the show. I actually don’t have much of anything to complain about this show. I thought it was very solid and fun. Randy Orton opened the show wanting the stipulation waved of that he couldn’t challenge Cena anymore for the WWE title. Ventura made his way to the ring and said he had a lot of respect for Orton but that things were changing. He was tired of seeing the same guys competing for the title all the time and wanted some new blood to get a shot. Right on with that comment. Ventura announced the breakthrough battle royal. There would be qualifying matches throughout the night with the winners making it into the battle royal. Then, the winner of the battle royal would face their brand's champion at the TLC PPV. The twist on this was that everyone involved in the qualifying matches would be people that had never been world champion. Ventura told Orton that rules were rules so that left Orton without a shot at it. The first qualifier was Kofi Kingston defeating Dolph Ziggler with the trouble in paradise kick. Kofi and Orton did have a faceoff as Kofi was on his way to the ring as Orton was on his way back to the locker room. In the second qualifier, Sheamus defeated Finlay hitting the celtic cross for the win. Next was a six man tag team match with the winning members going on to the battle royal. MVP, Mark Henry, and R Truth defeated Chris Masters, Jack Swagger, and Chavo Guerrero when Truth pinned Masters. The next match was set to be Primo vs. Evan Bourne. Orton attacked Primo as he made his way down the aisle. Orton then jumped in the ring demanding that he take Primo’s place. I should point out that Orton was once again talking to Ventura in his office earlier in the night. Ventura appeared on the screen and said that he had always said that rules were made to be broken and that Orton’s persistence had paid off. If Orton won this match, he was in the battle royal. Bourne fought Orton to a near fall at one point but Orton won with the RKO. Last qualifier had Cryme Tyme taking on Rhodes and Dibiase. Rhodes and Dibiase got the win when Dibiase pinned Shad with the dreamstreet. That gets us to the battle royal which was called by Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura. Yes, that was another one of Ventura’s rulings was they would reunite on commentary. The beginning of the match had Orton walking around on the outside while Sheamus stayed in the ring picking and choosing his shots on opponents. Sheamus got rid of Truth for the first elimination. Orton went after Kofi and their battle was on. Sheamus eliminated MVP. Henry then eliminated both Rhodes and Dibiase but Sheamus followed it by eliminating Henry. That left Sheamus, Kofi, and Orton. Orton thought he had eliminated Kofi but Kofi did a skin the cat move and hooked Orton with his legs pulling him out of the ring. Orton was furious and Kofi and him stared off. When Kofi turned around, he caught a clothesline from Sheamus for the elimintation. Sheamus wins the battle royal and will face Cena for the WWE title at TLC. Ventura then hosted the contract signing immediately afterwards. Sheamus put over how serious of a contender that he was while Cena mentioned that he wasn’t an announcer or camera guy that he could beat up like he had done in the past. Both signed the contract. Ventura then talked about how there was a conspiracy in WWE to keep Cena as the champion cause he was the "perfect looking little champion" that the company wanted. Ventura talked of how he never got a title shot saying that WWE doesn’t want a revolutionary type of champion like he would have been. This got Cena heading toward Ventura but Sheamus attacked with a big kick. He finished Cena by slamming him through the table. Ventura announced that the match at TLC would be a tables match. In other action, the feature was about matches that we hadn’t seen. One of which included John Cena against CM Punk. This was a fun match. The counters to each other’s finishers were cool at the end. Cena countered the GTS into a STF but Punk made it to the ropes. The finish had Cena hit the adjustment off of the second rope for the win. I liked that he had to go to that extreme to pin Punk. Really good match. DX faced The Hart Dynasty. Oh, and I should point out that Shawn and Triple H were shown backstage discussing last night with Shawn saying that he had to do what he had to do in the title match. He pointed out that Triple H would have hit the pedigree first if given the chance to which Triple H agreed. They definitely played up a comedy bit to the whole situation. Anyway, DX won the match when the Hart Dynasty set up for the clotheline but Shawn superkicked Smith in the back while Triple H hit the pedigree on Kidd for the win. Jericho interrupted after the match saying that they would be facing he and Show at TLC according to Ventura. DX then pointed out that they knew more than Jericho saying that the match would be a TLC match. Jericho pointed out that Show wasn’t there cause he was taking a personal day off while Triple H said that Show was over at the Hershey plant there in Hershey, PA. There was a match with the divas which included the heels being dressed as pilgrims. Mickie James, Melina, and Kelly Kelly defeated Michelle McCool, Jillian, and Layla. The heels were furious over having to wear the costumes. Michelle and Layla got fed up with it and left during the match. Jillian was then pinned by Melina. Here comes a really cool moment. Before the match, the special timekeeper was announced. The Gobbledy Gooker. I kid you not. Well, after the match, the Gobbledy Gooker attacked Melina. It was then revealed to be the returning Maryse. This was a cool moment. I laughed cause I knew Maryse was returning tonight but had forgotten and didn’t put two and two together. Batista made a threat in the ring saying that if anyone from Smackdown won the battle royal that he’d take them out cause he was going to take on The Undertaker. This brought out Kane who basically told him to bring it. Batista backed off slowly and walked out smiling.
Other notes on Raw. Jesse Ventura was incredible tonight. He made it seem so easy!! I hope people were taking notes cause that is how you use the mic. Can we have him back on the show permanently??!! Having Vince and him back on commentary was fantastic. Did you notice how suddenly the announcing made logical sense? What was that about??!! Why is it that the match was called logically when it isn’t by other announcers? I just laughed at the commentary cause it was so great and classic. Jesse had not missed a beat and Vince was not commentating like his mid 90's high caffeine style of commentary thankfully. How about Vince McMahon entering to the old Saturday Night’s Main Event theme music by Animotion??!! That was awesome. I find it funny that they play that theme on Raw but always replace it when it airs on WWE 24/7 Classics On Demand. So, with Henry and Swagger in the qualifying matches, I guess that finalizes that the ECW title is not a world title in WWE’s mind. I loved seeing DX vs. The Hart Dynasty just for history’s sake. Just something cool about having Shawn in the ring against Davey Boy Smith’s son since the Bulldog was a rival of his. I just knew something wasn’t right about that Primo/Bourne match cause it just seemed like an odd face vs. face match. Then, there was Orton which then made it make sense. How hilarious was the return of the Gobbledy Gooker? They even had the original theme music playing. Glad that they showed the old 1990 Survivor Series footage cause I’m not sure how much of the audience got the joke. I said this already but I can’t believe I didn’t even put that together that Maryse was in that costume cause I knew she was returning tonight. I thought it was kind of odd that they said that she had been gone cause she was depressed after losing the title. Why not just say the real story that she has been injured?? Wow, Tatanka’s music was played in 2009 on Raw. I would like to point out that it didn’t take long for WWE to start promoting that new Cena shirt and hat. They had an email out from WWE Shop right after that PPV last night promoting that you could buy it. Did you notice that WWE has already put that Kofi/Orton table spot from MSG in the Raw open? Has WWE run out of “did you knows” cause they sure are running a lot of the same ones lately. The setup for next week sure does look like WWE is going with major comedy. Verne Troyer is the guest host. DX got served as Hornswoggle is suing them at little people’s court. It doesn’t take a genius to see where this is going.
Upcoming guest hosts for Raw include Verne Troyer (next week), Mark Cuban (December 7), and Dennis Miller (December 14 for the Slammy Awards three hour special).
There is talk that Shane McMahon has been talking to Dana White of UFC. Interesting.
The Briscoe Brothers worked a dark match before the Smackdown tapings last week. If you’re a Ring Of Honor fan, you’ll definitely know them!!
The Hulkamania tour drew all kinds of media attention last week which was really amusing with how it was being reported. Maybe you saw the footage of the press conference with the “incident” between Hogan and Flair. Yes, it was all a plan of course and not real like many media outlets were reporting. It was booking 101 on how to build to a match for a big event. Many in Australia reported as a legit thing and there were media outlets here that teased it being real as well. Well, you’ve got to give them a ton of credit cause it got people talking about the tour. The pictures of a bloody Hogan were shown all over the place. The tour is underway with Hogan and Flair wrestling in the main events. The finish of the show over the weekend had Hogan winning the match. Both were bloodied during the match. Lacey Von Erich was in Flair’s corner. She was a distraction and then Hogan grabbed Flair’s brass knuckles and used them on Flair. Hogan then won the match. No legdrop during the match as expected since Hogan is really banged up and not far removed from having surgery done. Interesting to note in his book is that Hogan talks about how bad of shape that his back and hip are in due to him dropping the legdrop over the years. So, don’t expect to be seeing legdrops.
I’m currently reading the WWE Eddie Guerrero book and am nearing the halfway point of it. Yeah, I am flying through books in the last couple of weeks. I’ve got the Eric Bischoff book in line to read next.
I’m also currently watching the new Hulk Hogan DVD. Really impressed with it so far. I’ll have thoughts on it later down the line when I get it all watched.
It was like the 90’s all over again last week. I’m talking about listening to Don West sell merchadise. LOL. After Impact, TNA did a post show online with Don West and Jeremy Borash doing a big TNA shop deal. Don West was in his usual sports card selling mode with him screaming about the great deals and what you get for your money. I just laughed at it cause I remember how many late nights that I would see Don West on TV selling sports cards. Somebody responded to them saying that it was a gem mint 10 deal. I popped at that one cause he was notorious for saying that over and over when he’d sell stuff.
I have to mention this cause this is just amazing. The Pontiac Silverdome which of course held WrestleMania III recently was sold at an auction. A group from Toronto bought it and the land around it for $583,000. WOW. Yes, they are going to keep it open as well. Can you imagine buying that size of property for that price??!!
Take care and God bless!!
The WWE Survivor Series PPV was last night and here are the results of the show. The show opened with Team Miz against Team Morrison. Raw In MSG, TNA Turning Point Results, Survivor Series Preview, & More - November 16, 2009
Welcome to the “Raw plus MSG equals fun” edition of The Wrestling List.
Tonight’s Raw was held at Madison Square Garden with a hot crowd as always. Tonight’s guest host was Rowdy Roddy Piper. The show opened with Piper’s Pit backstage with Roddy talking to Luis Guzman. He said that he had a guest for him which was the Iron Chef but instead got the Iron Sheik. This was great stuff. Sheik starts cutting a promo on Hogan about the title loss back in 1984. The show then goes into the new open set to Nickelback’s “Burn It To The Ground”. The new open looks really cool and goes well with the song. Now, I’ll skip randomly around with this recap. The main event had John Cena teaming with The Undertaker vs. DX vs. Jericho/Big Show. I can’t remember the last time that I saw this but a member of each team got to stay in the ring at the same time. So, three members would be in at all times. Crowd was into this one. Split crowd on Cena. Undertaker was getting a big reaction in MSG. We had the moment of Shawn and Undertaker facing off. It didn’t last long as Show stopped it and got involved. Finishers started getting hit left and right at the end of the match. Undertaker hit a chokeslam on to Jericho. Triple H then followed with a clothesline knocking Taker from the ring. Triple H turned around into an attitude adjustment from Cena. Cena then got the pin on Triple H. As the celebration started, Undertaker got in the ring. Cena then was tombstoned by Undertaker. That was how the show ended. Piper did a promo in the ring talking about all the crazy things that he had done at MSG including him taking shots at several stars including Hogan. He brought out that classic line of talking about how he was the reason that Hogan didn’t have any hair. He said that he loved every moment of every nasty thing that he had done but had one more that he wanted. He called out Vince McMahon for a match tonight. He talked about how this was the place where he was fired by Vince as he set by to watch the Real Sports HBO interview. Vince did arrive. Vince talked of how bad of shape that Piper looked while Vince prided himself on how great that he looked. He announced his retirement from wrestling in the ring saying that he had beaten them all. Piper said retire was another word for coward and continued to challenge him for later in the night. Piper said that he would be fully retiring him. So, the moment happens later. Piper is in the ring and instead of Vince, he gets Randy Orton Now, I thought this was a cool nostalgic moment. Here comes Bob Orton’s kid to face off with Piper in a place where Piper and Bob Orton caused so much havoc. Randy Orton said that he didn’t know if Vince was coming or not but that Piper now had a big problem. Orton was ready for a fight and kicked Piper. Piper fired back but Orton got the advantage. Orton went for the punt but then this got messed up when Kofi’s music played too late. I’m assuming that the music playing was supposed to stop the kick. However, Orton went for the kick and stopped on his own. Then, the music hit. Orton didn’t look too happy about it either. Kofi hit the ring and the fight was on all over ringside. Piper watched and cheered on Kofi for a minute. The fight got into the crowd. Refs would separate them and then they would get back to each other. The fight ended up over at the technical area. I had a thought that Orton was going over there to punish someone for missing the music cue. LOL. The fight ended up in there. Kofi had him on a table and then got up on the guardrail. Refs pulled him down and away. Kofi broke free and then jumped back on the rail and dove on to Orton crashing through the table. Cool looking spot. US champion The Miz got a win on MVP following the skull crushing finale. Santino Marella won a match against Chavo. Hornswoggle got involved and this distracted Chavo. Santino rolled him up from behind to win. This brought out DX. They brought Hornswoggle in the ring and teased him becoming a member. Instead, Triple H pedigreed Hornswoggle in the middle of the ring. A lot of the crowd wasn’t really sure what to make of that moment. Melina defeated Alicia Fox with her sunset flip slam to retain the Divas title in a lumberjills match. Judah Friedlander of 30 Rock fame was the special announcer for it. Afterwards, the divas all went at in the ring with Team Mickie standing tall. Sheamus called out anyone out of the locker room to face him. He ended up beating up the timekeeper and throwing him across the announce table. Jerry Lawler stood up to him and got a kick in the face for it. Lawler was carried out of there and then Matt Striker stepped in to team with Cole for the rest of the show. Jack Swagger got a win on Evan Bourne following a very nice looking gut wrench powerbomb.
Other notes from Raw. I really like the new Raw open and theme song. We needed a new song for the show. Yes, MSG was sold out tonight. I liked that they had the set up very old school looking instead of the big screen. Sherri Shepherd was at ringside cheering for MVP. MVP put his hat on her as he entered the ring. She also later caught the free DX book that they threw into the crowd. Interesting to hear the crowd reactions always in MSG. Cena got his usual mixed reaction. Big reaction for Undertaker. Randy Orton had a good chant going too when he got in the ring. I loved Undertaker’s entrance. They even broke out the druids entrance for a Raw show. Chiling entrance. What I love about Shawn and Undertaker, they are forever immortalized with each other. Every time they face off, we’re going to think of WrestleMania 25 and about one of the greatest matches in history. Yesss, FINALLY someone called the divas “lumberjills”!!! How long have I been saying this??!! LOL. How awesome was that WWE in MSG music video set to Jay Z and Alicia Key’s song? That was incredibly produced and was a definite highlight of the night. It inspired me to do a recap of my favorite WWE memories of MSG which will be in next week’s List cause I don’t have room for it this week. Seeing the WrestleMania XX stuff in there obviously pointed out something that will be erased from history, the Benoit/Guerrero moment. Well, it is obvious that WWE is going to run that dancing pectoral muscles gimmick with Masters to the moon. You just know how it goes. When they get a laugh with something, they’ll do it every single week until we’re way past sick and tired of it. Like I said though, that was the most entertaining that I have ever found Masters to be when he did that a couple of weeks ago to that Ozzy song. LOL. Miz was able to get some easy heat ripping on the sports teams of New York. The “Let’s Go Yankees” chant was very loud. Lilian Garcia was brought into the ring as a surprise and sang the national anthem to open up the show.
WWE has signed a new deal with USA Network to keep Raw on the network until 2014. This is obviously a no brainer for both. Raw is crucial in helping USA in the cable ratings war.
Jesse The Body Ventura will be the guest host for next week’s 3 hour Thanksgiving Raw on USA Network.
TNA held their Turning Point PPV last night and I am hearing rave reviews for the two main events. I’m talking about the triple threat TNA title match with AJ, Joe, and Daniels. Then, the other being Kurt Angle and Desmond Wolfe. Here are the results of the show. The Amazing Red defeated Homicide to retain the X-Division title after he hit the code red for the pinfall. ODB, Sarita, and Taylor Wilde defeated The Beautiful People in a match where all the Knockouts titles were on the line. ODB pinned Rayne to win the match. The British Invasion defeated Beer Money and The Motor City Machineguns to retain the tag team titles. The finish had Eric Young getting involved. James Storm pulled him off of the apron. Young was ordered to leave the ring by Hebner but Kevin Nash made his way to the ring. Nash grabbed the Legends title from Young and then nailed Storm with it. Roode ended up getting pinned in the ring after this all went down. Later, Nash was interviewed about what happened and said that Hogan told him to do it with what occurred during the tag title match. Tara defeated Awesome Kong in the steel cage match after she hit a flying crossbody off the cage to get the pinfall. Rhino and Team 3D defeated Dinero, Hernandez, and Matt Morgan when Rhino hit the gore on to Hernandez for the win. Scott Steiner defeated Bobby Lashley in a No DQ – Falls Count Anywhwere match after he hit Lashley with a metal object to win the match. Kurt Angle defeated Desmond Wolfe by submission after hooking the triangle choke. After the match, Wolfe made sure to tell Angle that he had not seen the last of him. This match is getting rave reviews by the way. Great start for Wolfe’s TNA PPV career and I hope they keep pushing him big. Next was the triple threat TNA championship match with AJ Styles defending against Samoa Joe and Daniels. AJ retained the title. The finish had Daniels countering out of the musclebuster from Joe. Daniels hit the STO but went for the BME on Joe. AJ then hit a 450 splash from a springboard to pin Joe. This match delivered huge. If this is the style of product that we are about to see from TNA based on these last two matches, it is going to be very good news for all of us fans. Hopefully, TNA is getting on the right path here.
Rob Van Dam had some interesting comments to the UK Sun last week about a conversation he had with Vince McMahon about the new ECW. Wow, and you wonder why it didn’t work???!! LOL. Read what Rob had to say at this link: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/wrestling/2722834/Exclusive-Rob-Van-Dam-interview-on-Vince-McMahon-and-the-death-of-ECW.html
WWE announced that Dennis Miller will be the guest host on the 3 hour Slammy Award edition of Raw on December 14.
WWE also announced that Jamie Noble has retired but tied it to the storyline of the injuries that he suffered on Raw from Sheamus. It does sound like he is just going to be working behind the scenes instead of being in the ring.
Well, let the Ultimate Warrior into the Hall Of Fame rumors begin. WWE and The Warrior are apparently settling their legal dispute and it is starting to end quietly. This is fueling the rumors that maybe The Ultimate Warrior will be inducted into The Hall Of Fame at WrestleMania weekend. Will he? Well, who knows but it is taking place in his backyard so we’ll see.
Stacy Keibler told The Baltimore Sun that she’d be interested in doing a guest host deal for Raw and that her management had reached out to WWE. This Sunday is the WWE Survivor Series and here is the lineup for the show. John Cena defends the WWE title against Shawn Michaels and Triple H in a triple threat match. Undertaker defends the World title against Chris Jericho and The Big Show in a triple threat match. Batista vs. Rey Mysterio. Then, we move on to the traditional Survivor Series matches. Team Kofi (Kofi Kingston, Christian, MVP, Mark Henry and R Truth) vs. Team Orton (Randy Orton, Ted Dibiase, Cody Rhodes, CM Punk, and William Regal). Team Morrison (John Morrison, Evan Bourne, Matt Hardy, Shelton Benjamin, and Finlay) vs. Team Miz (The Miz, Jack Swagger, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, and Dolph Ziggler). Team Mickie (Mickie James, Melina, Gail Kim, Eve, and Kelly Kelly) vs. Team Michelle (Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix, Layla, Jillian, and Alicia Fox).
That is it for this week. Take care and God bless!!
WWE Hulk Hogan's Unreleased Collector's Series DVD Released On Tuesday
Tuesday, November 17 is the release of the new WWE Hulk Hogan DVD entitled Hulk Hogan’s Unreleased Collector’s Series. This DVD does something that the other DVD releases of Hogan have not done and that is including more rare stuff. I’m a big fan of that. I was very interested to see what the lineup would be for this DVD set and there is a lot more rare stuff on it. The big promotion on this DVD is that they are promoting it as matches that have never been released on DVD. The DVD will have several matches from his early career including AWA footage, a match against then WWF champion, Bob Backlund, and a MSG match against Andre The Giant from 1980. It is really nice to see the lineup of house show matches that are on this set from MSG, Boston Garden, and more from over the years. I like seeing a match from the series of post WrestleMania V rematches with Savage on this set as I’ve seen very few of those. Speaking of Hogan/Savage matches, there is a match from 1986 on this set. I think those matches were probably better than their matches from any other era. Speaking of rare, how about one on one matches from the late 80’s with Ravishing Rick Rude and The One Man Gang? That is very nice!! Good picks from the WCW era for the most part which is of matches that aren’t a commonly seen. As a fan that has seen most of the Hogan stuff released, I’m really curious to see which of this I have seen and what I haven’t seen. This release is three disc set and here is the lineup.

Hulk Hogan: My Life Outside The Ring - Book Review - November 15, 2009
I got a full day of reading in on Saturday and finished the entire Hulk Hogan: My Life Outside The Ring autobiography. I should first point out that I’ve been a Hulkamaniac for over 20 years now and he was the reason that I started watching wrestling. I saw him on TV and that was it for me. This bigger than life superhero that always fought for good. Interesting read. The book covers his childhood, getting into wrestling, and then finishes with the tough times in his personal life over the last couple of years. As far as wrestling goes, the book covers a lot of his getting involved in the business with the story of Matsuda and the crew down in Florida doing all they could to get him to go away. If you haven’t heard the story, Hogan was all the time trying to talk to the people around Florida Championship Wrestling wanting to learn to be a wrestler. Matsuda finally got him into the ring but his intention was to chase him away. Basically, he broke Hogan’s leg in the ring on that first day expecting that he would never come back. Hogan came back and continued to keep going. However, Hogan went to other territories and continued to make bigger money. He covers the story of going to the then WWWF and working for Vince McMahon Sr. Sylvester Stallone got in touch with Hogan about wanting him to be in Rocky III. He tells the story of their meeting which was funny with how Stallone knew that Hogan was the right guy for the role. McMahon blew up over it saying that he wouldn’t allow it. Hogan went for the movie role and said he’d make money elsewhere. That would be the AWA. Hogan worked his way up there and Hulkamania was taking off. Later, Hogan got a call from Vince McMahon Jr. about returning to the WWF saying that he was taking over the company and had big plans for Hogan. The two paired up and took off. The book just kind of stops there as far as mainly covering the wrestling portion of his career. It does keep hitting some big points every so often as far as happenings or injuries but the rest of the book mostly focuses on his personal life. It does cover the steroid trial from the mid 90’s against Vince McMahon where Hogan took the stand during it. The last half of the book is mostly covering the last couple of years with Nick’s accident, the divorce, and the inner battle that he had with himself. It was interesting to get his side of the story on a lot of the things that the media reported over the last couple of years. Given how I’ve seen the media cover stories that I knew about including wrestling stories in the last couple of years, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see the media have their own agenda on things. Anyway, Hogan got very low with all that he was dealing with and not knowing how to fix things. It was inspiring to read about how he found God and how it turned his life around. He used this positive swing in his life to finally change things and be happy. The finish of the book definitely has this comeback feel to it where he is ready to move on with his life and continue that happiness and peace that he has finally found in his life. As I read these final chapters, I turned to the thought of what does he have planned for working at TNA? Maybe professionally this will be the cap on his comeback. Like I said, it is an interesting read and you get to see his point of view on the things in the last couple of years including how the Hogan Knows Best series was done and how things were already falling apart before the series started. If you’re a Hogan fan, you’ll likely enjoy the book. Keep in mind that most of this book is personal life stuff so if you’re wanting to read more wrestling kind of things, you’ll want to pick up his WWE book that was released several years ago.

Raw In UK, Vince Talks About Shane Leaving, WWE PPV Buys & Price Changes, Hogan/TNA, & More - November 9, 2009
Welcome to the “I’m excited for Raw next week with Piper and a MSG crowd” edition of The Wrestling List. That MSG crowd is always a big barometer when it comes to whether they like the current WWE product and they are never afraid to voice their opinion. It should be interesting. Piper will get a HUGE ovation.
Tonight’s Raw was held from Sheffield, England with Ricky Hatton being the show’s guest host. The show opened with Hatton being confronted by Jericho and Big Show. Hatton mentioned how he loved how Show was previously knocked out by a boxer. Show offered him a free shot but Jericho stepped in. Jericho and Show ended up taking jabs at each other over their title match at Survivor Series. Hatton made the main event match for tonight with Jericho and Show taking on DX. They surrounded Hatton and then DX arrived. Triple H said that they came out just to stop them from getting themselves embarrassed by another Raw general manager. Shawn got the action going as he punched Jericho out of the ring. DX and Hatton surrounded Show and then Show stepped out of the ring. The main event was DX against Show and Jericho with Cena at ringside on commentary. The finish had Shawn ducking Show’s knockout punch and it caught Jericho. Triple H clotheslined Show out of the ring. Shawn then pinned Jericho. After the match, it was announced that there would be a triple threat tag team match on Raw next week. DX vs. Jericho and Big Show but also Cena would be involved and have a tag team partner. Cena pointed at the aisle and The Undertaker made his way on to the ramp. Cena will team with Undertaker next week. In other happenings, Kofi Kingston was the guest on the VIP Lounge hosted by MVP and accompanied by Mark Henry. Legacy interrupted it. After an exchange of words, Orton said that he was going to send the three of them back to where they came from, the hood. Kofi then slapped Orton and we went to commercial. The Orton/Henry match was underway when the show returned. Henry was on his way to victory but picked up Orton off the mat. Orton hit a RKO and got the win. Kofi got in the ring and checked on Henry. Orton snuck up from behind and then slapped Kofi. Kofi fired back with a right hand sending Orton from the ring. Ricky Hatton put himself in a MMA match against Chavo Guerrero. Hatton won with a right hand putting Chavo down for the count. Jack Swagger confronted The Miz backstage about wanting to be the captain of their Survivor Series team. Swagger took on Evan Bourne in a match and had it under control. The Miz arrived and walked to ringside. Swagger got distracted and Bourne took advantage. Bourne won with the air bourne finisher. Alicia Fox accompanied by Jillian defeated Kelly Kelly who was accompanied by Gail Kim. Alicia won with a scissor kick to the back of the head.
Other notes from Raw. I definitely have to admit that I have no idea on who Ricky Hatton is. I think I have heard his name before but maybe that is it. So, he was a brand new personality for me tonight. Miz got a big reaction from the fans in England. There was a very audible “Miz is awesome” chant. Well, at least we heard “really” said about ten times again this week during the Miz/Swagger segment. LOL.
Raw will be at Madison Square Garden next week. That will be a fun show as the MSG crowd is always a lot of fun. The special guest host will be none other than Rowdy Roddy Piper. Now, that is a great guest host for MSG. Looking forward to that!! The main event will be a triple threat tag team match with DX vs. Jericho/Big Show vs. John Cena/Undertaker. The new Raw theme song will debut as well which will be Nickelback’s “Burn It To The Ground”. I mentioned last week that WWE was recording footage of it at the Raw tapings a few weeks ago.
On Smackdown this week will be a main event of Undertaker vs. Chris Jericho.
Some matches for Survivor Series were added to the lineup. Thankfully, they are traditional Survivor Series matches. Team Kingston (Kofi Kingston, Christian, MVP, Mark Henry, and R Truth) will take on Team Orton (Randy Orton, Ted Dibiase, Cody Rhodes, CM Punk, and William Regal). Team Morrison (John Morrison, Matt Hardy, Finlay, Evan Bourne, and Shelton Benjamin) vs. Team Miz (The Miz, Jack Swagger, Sheamus, Dolph Ziggler, and Drew McIntyre). Women’s traditional Survivor Series match will have Team Mickie (Mickie James, Melina, Kelly Kelly, Eve, and Gail Kim) vs. Team Michelle (Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix, Jillian, Layla, and Alicia Fox). Happy to see WWE adding these style of matches to the PPV cause that is what has always made this event unique.
WWE released their quarterly numbers last week. Their numbers basically went like this. PPV buyrates are getting worse. SummerSlam had the biggest hit on dropping buys. SummerSlam did 477,000 buys last year and only had 369,000 buys this year. Night Of Champions did 267,000 buys while Breaking Point did only 169,000 buys. Live attendance was up and WWE pointed at them lowering ticket prices as the reason for it. Home video revenue was up. WWE Classics On Demand was down a bit from last year.
Vince McMahon was on the conference call last week with investors discussing their quarterly numbers. Vince was asked about Shane’s departure from the company and had these comments, “The other aspect of family, because some people perceive this to be a family business, but I do not. But none the less, my son Shane, as well, has decided to pursue other opportunities in the marketplace. Nonetheless, I've mentioned before that the strength of our management team, is stronger now than it has ever been. And if your last name is McMahon or not, decisions are always made on your abilities, in terms of whatever position you hold now and/or will in the future, and be judged on your performance, not because your last name is McMahon. So, I'm pretty strong on that as well. And other than that, we will entertain questions, from everyone, and I hope there would be any number of them."
Wow, I’m not sure about this decision. It appears that WWE is going to raise the prices on PPV’s again beginning with the Royal Rumble. The PPV’s will now cost $44.95 a piece. WrestleMania will remain the same price at $54.95. WWE is also going to do one less PPV in 2010 than they did in 2009. At a time when the PPV buyrates are not good, it just seems bizarre to me to ask people to pay more money for shows.
I talked of WWE raising their PPV prices. Well, TNA is doing the same thing. They are going up $5 on their PPV prices as well.
If you watched the opening of TNA Impact last week, you saw a meeting that was held by Dixie Carter where she talked to those in the company including talent and officials. This was a legitimate meeting that was allowed to be recorded for airing. The basic deal of the meeting was Dixie telling everyone that changes have been happening and are coming with the company as she looks for the company to grow.
Hulk Hogan was on Bubba The Love Sponge this morning and spoke about TNA. Some interesting things said on it. For one, he said that he had reconciled with Randy Savage and that he was in negotiatiions to bring him into the company. Now, that would be interesting cause Savage has not been seen anywhere in wrestling since his appearances in TNA several years ago. Hogan and Savage’s relationship is just as on and off in real life as it has been on TV over the last 20 years or so. Now, this next one is one that I just can’t believe. Hogan said that Stone Cold Steve Austin might be coming to TNA. Hogan also added that he is “running the show” in TNA. Keep in mind that Hogan does tend to hype things big sometimes and I think this is a case of him getting people talking. There has never been any kind of talk about Austin being interested in doing anything other than WWE and he isn’t really even that interested in that at the moment. As far as Savage, sure, I could believe that. Their relationship has been up and down so it is possible that the two have worked things out. Hogan did mention that he’d like to bring in The Nasty Boys to TNA. Now, I will for sure believe that one. Austin and Savage though is one of those “I’ll have to see it to even consider it really happening” type deals.
As far as the November programming for WWE 24/7 Classics On Demand goes, the news on it has slowly started working its way out this week. My question has been for a month that is fan voted, where are the voting choices? One person mentioned about an online survey that they did for the service a while back and talked of how that might be where they got their voting results from. I do think that could be it as I do remember filling out that survey. That is all I can think of cause it is humorous to look on the programming and seeing voting results when I saw no options to vote. Maybe it did come from that survey. With that being said, it is a fairly weak lineup based on the fact that it is a big anniversary celebration. The shorties this month are all falls count anywhere matches. It is funny to look at the other options for votes and see how obviously that was going to win. In second place were hair matches. I kid you not that one of the options were matches featuring something on a pole. Well, that would be easy to fill up on programming. Just go to Vince Russo era stuff to get matches with stuff on a pole. Here is what has shown up so far. The Hall Of Fame profile is on Jimmy Hart. WWE is airing shows from New York based on the results of what cities of shows that we'd like to mostly see shows from. So, one of the big ones airing includes Survivor Series 1996. This was a great show. Austin vs. Bret for the first time in their big feud. Shawn vs. Sid. Then, we have The Rock's debut on this as well. TV classics airing include: ECW (December 1996), NWA (February 1987), Prime Time Wrestling (May 1988), and Monday Night Wars (Raw and Nitro from February 1998). They are also airing the Best Of Saturday Night's Main Event DVD set which I'm thrilled about cause I've never bought the DVD. I've basically quit buying DVD's for the most part too cause they eventually turn up on here. The delay is a long one though. A new Legends Of Wrestling roundtable will air later this month which is the talked about Managers edition.
Hey, we have voting for next month on the WWE 24/7 Classics On Demand website. The voting on the Big Ones is between WWE SummerSlam 2002, Royal Rumble 2000, and New Year's Revolution 2006. These are some interesting choices and all of them are winners to me. So, I figured I'd that I'd talk a little about all of these events. WWE SummerSlam 2002 was a great event. The match that is obviously the most talked about on this show was the return of Shawn Michaels as he took on Triple H in the street fight. I will never forget that night as a long time Shawn Michaels fan. Seeing him back in the ring was a dream and just unreal to see how he hadn’t lost a step in four years. One of the most amazing performances ever. This was also the night of Brock Lesnar’s jump to the top of WWE when he faced The Rock. One of the things that I remember most about that match is just how much of a face reaction that Brock was getting. Royal Rumble 2000 was an incredible show and might possibly be the best Royal Rumble of all time in my mind. This Rumble took place in front of a hot MSG crowd in New York City. This featured the Rock's Royal Rumble win. It also has the championship match between Triple H and Cactus Jack which is an incredible street fight. The event opens with Tazz's debut with the company and gets a huge pop from MSG as he faces Kurt Angle. Great show. New Year's Revolution 2006 is an interesting show which took place in New York. The show features the Elimination Chamber match with John Cena defending the WWE title against Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Kane, Carlito, and Chris Masters. This was also the night that Edge cashed in the money in the bank. He cashed it in in front of a very anti-Cena crowd and was greeted with a big reaction. So, what would I vote for? I am personally voting for New Year's Revolution 2006. Why? Yes, it is the worst of the three shows in my opinion but I have never actually seen the whole show. So, I would like to watch it. Yeah, selfish me. LOL. Seriously though, these are some very solid choices. The other two shows are tremendous.
Wishing all of you a great week!! Take care and God bless!!
Tonight’s Raw was held from Sheffield, England with Ricky Hatton being the show’s guest host. The show opened with Hatton being confronted by Jericho and Big Show. TNA House Show Live Report From Murray, KY - November 6, 2009
TNA held a house show at the RSEC on Friday night. This was the first wrestling event for Murray after 10 years of rumblings about how wrestling was coming to Murray. The upper level of the arena and the seats on the sides of the building were not used at all. So, the seating was all at ringside and on the lower level in the middle of the building. Before the show, Hernandez and Abyss were signing autographs at a table just as you walked into the building. I liked how TNA did their countdown. They would play music and after every song, there would be an announcement of how much time was left before the show begins. Interesting that the song that played with 10 minutes to go was Enter Sandman. That brought back ECW memories hearing that. Last song to play at the five minute mark was Welcome To The Jungle. Good song to get the crowd pumped up. I have to say that this was a good crowd especially for the size of it. Jeremy Borash was introduced to open the show and he made his way to the ring to Motley Crue’s Wildside song. He encouraged everyone to take a ton of pics and then to send them to TNA showing your live event experience. He also teased about how the loudest fans would get backstage passes.
The show opened with Dinero making his way to the ring. I realized that it was Elijah Burke when he took the hood off. LOL. He ripped on the fans saying that we had set a record for the largest gathering of losers in one place. LOL. He took on Suicide who made his way out through the crowd and got a good reaction from the crowd. An all right opener which was won by Suicide. The next match had Rob Terry accompanied by Doug Williams taking on Kip James. Amazing to me how much that Kip still does all the DX stuff. During his entrance, he posed on the ropes and held up a quick DX sign. He did the DX chop during the match as well. The finish had Kip getting distracted by Williams. When Kip turned around, he caught a kick from Terry. Terry then got the win. Next was the Knockouts match of the night. This featured Alissa Flash taking on Sojo Bolt. This was easily the best match of the night to this point and I would say was probably the second best match of the night overall. Alissa is a really good heel and played off of the crowd really well. Her entrance had her teasing that she was going to unzip her top and then zipped it back up. That was funny. There were a lot of fans like ourselves that really enjoyed her as a heel and started cheering for her. Alissa did this awesome move where she hooked Bolt in a surfboard move. Then, she stomped her right in the back sending Bolt’s face into the mat. It looked nasty!! Move of the night at that point that got us all ooohhing at it. Alissa won the match following a move that combined a slam and piledriver together. Funny moment here when they played Man In The Box as the music break between matches. Where is Tommy Dreamer when we need him??!! Next was the former LAX partners going at it. Homicide vs. Hernandez. Hernandez is a big guy. Homicide got heel heat immediately from the fans when he told everyone to shut up or he’d burn the remainder of the backstage passes. It was really amazing just how easy it was for heels to get heat with some fans. Hernandez had some impressive moves to start the match including a big shouldertackle and then about a 15 second standing vertical suplex. Hernandez won the match after hitting a sit down powerbomb. Homicide went crazy after the match mad over the loss grabbing chairs and getting an alarmed look from Jeremy Borash from ringside that was pretty funny. This got us to intermission.
On to the second half of the show. Abyss taking on Rhino. Rhino got a good reaction coming out. He cut a heel promo ripping on the fans doing all he could to deflect the cheers that he was getting. Yeah, it didn’t work and never does work. However, it fired up the fans that were already against him. We had a battle going on in our section between Rhino and Abyss. Yeah, I was for Rhino. I am just not into this face character of Abyss. Not working for me at all. Turn him heel and go back to the original character. The finish had Rhino ducking Abyss and then hitting the gore for the pinfall. After the match, Rhino got on the mic saying that he was going to finish Abyss. He picked up a chair from ringside. As he got in the ring, Abyss kicked the chair back in to Rhino’s face. Abyss then posed for the fans. Next was Doug Williams making his way to the ring. He said that his tag team partner wasn’t there so that meant no tag team title defense against Beer Money. He added that his partner’s passport had been stolen so he was looking into who was behind it. He ripped the fans and then sang “God Save The Queen”. This brought out Cowboy James Storm who got a good pop from the fans. Fans were really into him. I can’t say that I was disappointed in not seeing Robert Roode. LOL. I wasn’t really crazy about Storm putting over beer drinking as much as he was really hyping up who in the crowd was beer drinkers. Anyway, he had two backstage passes. Williams attacked Storm and then tore up the passes which got quite a bit of heat. Storm made a comeback and threw Williams from the ring. Afterwards, Storm invited this little girl in the ring and he put her up on his shoulder. Then, it was main event time. This was a dream match for me to see live. AJ Styles defending the TNA championship against Samoa Joe. Cool lighting for the entrances as they cut most of the lights giving it more of a darker look. Joe made his way to the ring and then AJ made his entrance. Good reaction for both. I was surprised that there weren’t more fans behind Joe in this match. Yep, Joe’s moves look just as nasty in person. First though, AJ got the match going quick with his drop down as Joe ran from the ropes followed by the incredible dropkick. I always love that spot. Joe hit a splash in the corner followed by a nasty pele kick to AJ. I definitely gave a big reaction to Joe’s quick low to the mat powerslam. I love just about every move of Joe’s. LOL. I was definitely cheering spots in this one as I love both of these guys as performers. The finish had Joe going for the musclebuster. AJ countered out of it into the Styles Clash. However, Joe got out of it. They went at each other and AJ was able to hit the pele kick. AJ gets the win and retains the TNA title. After the match, there was the tease of the big surprise which had been talked about for a while from Borash. AJ teased about taking us all backstage but then the announcement was made that backstage was coming to us. Yep, an autograph session around ringside.
So, that gets us to the post show. Of course, I made my way to ringside. James Storm, Kip James, Hernandez, Abyss, Suicide, and Jeremy Borash were around the ring signing autographs. Everyone was having a great time meeting the stars. AJ was in the ring getting pictures taken with fans. Pay $20 and get to have your picture taken in the ring with him. Of course, I went for this one!! My nerd self wouldn’t have it any other way. LOL. I got my picture taken with AJ and he was very nice. I told him how seeing he and Joe in the main event working against each other was a dream match for me and he was very appreciative of the comments. Definitely have to give TNA a ton of credit here cause this photo taking was very well organized and they got the line through fast. That was it from there for the show.
Other notes from the show. It was funny just how many old ECW themes they were playing in between matches. Borash would get on the mic and talk to the fans with some music playing. Definitely a different feel from a WWE show as far as that goes. There was a guy in the crowd wearing a shirt that said “If Russo books, we riot”. I loved that shirt!! There was a guy in the front row dressed as Cobra Commander and was cheering the heels for the most part from what I could tell. My thought was if this guy was the Gene Simmons of Murray? Some of you will get that reference. There is a guy in Cape that always dresses as Gene and it would be funny if this guy kept the Cobra tradition going. Does Konnan get royalties every time that Homicide comes to the ring to the old LAX music?
Overall thoughts. Really fun show. I had a great time. Good crowd in Murray. Borash did say that they would be back in Murray especially after the great reactions from the crowd. Borash and TNA were posting live results and happenings from the show as it happened on Twitter. Like I said, the crowd was good for its size. AJ and Joe being the main event was great. You always want that match to go longer but I was very happy with the match. Lots of great spots and high impact moves. I’m a fan of both so seeing those two in the main event was great. Did I mention that the tickets were $20 including the extra fees? Yeah, talk about bargain for your dollar. Very nice. Great time. So, that’s it for this live report. Hope that I recapped it well for all of you. I’ll be back with the normal Wrestling List soon. Take care and God bless!!
Raw Is Osbournes, Smackdown Recap, & More - November 3, 2009
Welcome to the “can DX please replace Cole and Lawler on commentary?” edition of The Wrestling List. TNA continues to be the talk of the wrestling world in the last week based on the Hogan/Bischoff announcement. Let’s get into the List.
Is TNA about to make another announcement? That seems to be the buzz and rumor going around. There is a lot of talk that TNA is set to make another big announcement in the near future. I have to say that Hogan signing with TNA has gotten a lot of buzz and publicity for the company. Most of the wrestling talk all of last week was about Hogan and TNA. The Impact rating did see a jump due to the Hogan promotion for his press conference airing as Impact did a 1.3 on Thursday night.
Tonight’s Raw was hosted by Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne. I thought tonight was a fun show and they were fun hosts. The crowd was into it so thumbs up from me on their performance. The show opened with them in the ring. Big Show, Miz, Rhodes, and Dibiase all complained about wanting their losses taken out of the record book last week. Well, not Big Show. Big Show just wanted an apology from the Raw roster. DX arrived and promoted both of the books by DX and of Ozzy. This all resulted in DX basically making the matches for the night with them whispering to the Osbournes. The main event would have Jericho vs. Big Show vs. Cena. DX was on commentary at ringside. Jericho and Show did get into it at one point. The finish had Cena picking up Jericho in the adjustment. Show landed a knockout punch to Cena from the apron. Jericho landed on Cena and got the pin. They went to doubleteam Cena and then DX jumped in to help. Shawn got KO’d by a Show punch as he stepped through the ropes. Triple H fought both Jericho and Show but then Jericho hit a codebreaker which sealed the fate for DX. In other action, Kofi Kingston was set to take on Randy Orton. The match went for a couple of minutes until Rhodes and Dibiase got involved. Kofi dove on to all three of them on the floor but was then surrounded. Ozzy and Sharon appeared on the screen. Ozzy announced that a six man tag team match cause he figured this was how it was going to play out. Joining the match was MVP and Mark Henry and it would be them and Kofi against Legacy. The finish had Kofi stopping a RKO attempt. Cody then jumped off the top and was caught by Henry. Henry landed the world’s strongest slam for the pinfall on Rhodes. A divas battle royal was held with the winner being the number one contender to Melina’s Divas title. In the battle royal were Kelly Kelly, The Bellas, Gail Kim, Alicia Fox, and Eve. Eve was doing well but was then distracted by Swagger who had made his way to ringside. Eve was eliminated and this left a final two of Kelly and Alicia. Alicia dumped Kelly out and won the battle royal to become the number one contender. Sheamus faced Jamie Noble and won a squash match. After the match, Sheamus destroyed Noble by powerbombing him on the floor. Noble was stretchered out. Miz defeated Evan Bourne after avoiding the airbourne. He threw Bourne into the corner and hit the skull crushing finale for the pinfall. There was a bizarrely entertaining segment called Raw’s Got Talent. This was a play off of America’s Got Talent with Ozzy, Sharon, and The Great Khali being the judges. Lawler hosted it. First was Santino who bit the head off of a bat…..man figurine. Next was Chris Masters who was dancing his pectoral muscles to Crazy Train. Last was Jillian Hall and Chavo singing a duet. After being criticized for their singing, they made their way to the ring. Jillian got in Sharon's face and was slapped by Sharon. Chavo got in Sharon’s face and then Khali stood up. He nailed Chavo with a chop. Hornswoggle arrived dressed as Jack Osbourne and hit a tadpole splash.
Other notes from Raw. Can we have DX on commentary instead of Cole and Lawler??!! They were great. I know I enjoyed a lot of their shoot type comments that they were doing. Wow, Triple H was letting Michael Cole have it with making fun of him with the “oh my” and “vintage” whatever. I did laugh at the continued joke of Shawn having a physics degree which they said was from the University of Budapest. This went along with all of the percentage talk of the odds of DX winning at Survivor Series. It was 66% in case you missed it. This was funny stuff. Did you hear Shawn make the comment of how he couldn’t concentrate cause he had this voice in his head telling him to keep saying how he is enjoying watching Cena get beat up? Triple H also alluded to the voice saying that he didn’t know how they did their job with this voice yelling in their ear all the time. This was all great stuff. Ok, Chris Masters. I have to mention this. His dancing pecs to Crazy Train was the most entertaining thing that he has ever done. LOL. I have to say that they did good by making Sheamus look tough tonight by having him just destroy Noble. The conversation backstage with Cena and DX was hilarious with Hornswoggle. Then, the Bellas over hearing it was great too. Shawn cracked me up with the whole deal of how everyone keeps stealing their lines after Cena ran off stealing one of their catchphrases. The "Sharon" line from Ozzy reacting to the Show fist in his face was funny. If Ozzy's book doesn't come out until January, how has Michael Cole read it? Yeah, I get that he could have read it backstage or something but I just though that was silly to say.
Ricky Hatton will be the guest host on Raw from the UK next week.
Smackdown opened up last week with Chris Jericho talking to Teddy Long about how he won Bragging Rights for Smackdown. Long did take the trophy away from Jericho saying that it belonged to the brand. After the bragging continued, Kane made his way to the ring to point out that he was the co-captain and just as responsible. Both wanted the title match at Survivor Series against Undertaker. Long made a match with Kane taking on Jericho with the winner getting to join the title match making it a triple threat match. Jericho ended up winning when he countered Kane’s jump off of the top turnbuckle and landed the codebreaker for the win. CM Punk went to Long wanting a title opportunity as well. Vince McMahon was there at the time and made a suggestion of a match between Punk and referee Scott Armstrong. So, the match was made. Punk verbally abused him and shoved him. Armstrong punched back and landed some shots. Punk then finished off Armstrong with the GTS and put a foot on Armstrong for the pin. Rey Mysterio called out Batista wanting them to work things out. Batista definitely had that heel change walking to the ring with that entrance. Batista warned Rey several times to leave the ring or that things would be bad for him. Rey spoke up saying that if he had realized that getting in that fatal four way match would have messed up their friendship, he never would have entered it. Rey kept saying how their friendship was more important than anything else. Rey pleaded with him to save their friendship mentioning Eddie Guerrero’s name to which Batista responded that Eddie was gone. Batista said that he was only thinking about himself now and not about Rey. Batista left the ring with a big smile. Matt Hardy ran into Batista backstage and gave advice on not letting things destroy a brother kind of relationship cause you can’t take things back. Batista just laughed and left. Dolph Ziggler defeated John Morrison by countout. The finish had Ziggler landing a face first slam on to the announce table leaving Morrison laying on the floor. Ziggler rolled in and won by countout. Hardy defeated Escobar after Hardy pulled off a desperation pin attempt to win the match despite his leg being worked on. Cryme Tyme hosted the Halloween Costume Contest with Mickie James, Michelle McCool, Layla, and Natalya. Mickie ended up winning based on the crowd reaction and was dressed as Elektra. The heels attacked afterwards and the fight was on. Michelle attacked Mickie from behind and then left. Finlay and McIntyre were set to wrestle but McIntyre attacked him while entering the ring. He put a beating on Finlay and the ref threw the match out. Beth Phoenix won a squash match against Jenny Brooks. When I saw Jenny, my first thought was wow, a women’s squash match. It has to have been over fifteen years since I’ve seen one of those based on having one of the women being a basic unknown on TV.
WWE has produced a new opening for Raw which will debut soon. The new theme song for Raw will be the new song from Nickelback from what I’ve heard. WWE was recording crowd footage last week live at Raw to include into the opening based on live reports.
Tickets go on sale this Saturday for WrestleMania XXVI.
WWE will be releasing volumes one and two of the new Survivor Series Anthology tomorrow on DVD. The two volumes will cover the events from 1987-1996. There is a LOT of great stuff in those years.
WWE has done some moving around with the announce teams due to Jim Ross being gone. Todd Grisham and Matt Striker are now teaming on Smackdown while ECW is now hosted by Josh Mathews and Byron Saxton.
Mickie James, the country artist? That appears to be a possibility. AllAccess.com is reporting that Mickie James has signed with Skyline Management Group who deal in developing country music singers.
Jim Cornette has posted his thoughts on the Hogan/Bischoff take over of TNA and the involvement of Vince Russo. He isn’t pulling punches on it and here is the link to check it out:

This is usually where I give the preview for WWE 24/7 Classics On Demand for the month of November. Well, I have no idea what is airing!! WWE has been promoting all of October about how November would be vote winners from the fans to celebrate the five year anniversary of the service. Well, no polls have shown up and we’ve got no lineup at all. I don’t know where they are getting the voting results from unless something shows up weekly. Regardless, we have a month of fan voting stuff and there has been nothing to vote on as of yet. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
That is all for tonight. Wishing all of you a great and safe week. Take care and God bless!!
